What does 5+ free mean? We all see nail polish companies claiming to be 5-free, 7-free, 8-free, etc. They say they’re healthier and safer, but what does that mean to you as the consumer?

I’ll admit, up until I started having children, I never paid much mind to the ingredients in anything I used. Household cleaners, bath and body products, or food. Once I realized I was responsible for making the absolute best choices I could for my little unborn children, I started doing some research on more Eco-friendly and healthier alternatives to the products I was using on a daily basis. And WOW was that eye-opening.  It’s made me so much more mindful of where/what products I buy for me and for my family! We’re not perfect, but I think we could all be a little more intentional with how we spend our dollars, right?

So let’s dive a little deeper in to WHY we don’t want these ingredients in our polish, shall we?

Toluene: Our polish is virtually odorless – and the absence of this solvent plays large part in that. Frequently used as the solvent in paint thinners, adhesives, and printing ink; toluene has the potential to cause severe neurological harm when inhaled. Inhaling high levels of toluene in a short time may cause light-headedness, nausea, or unconsciousness.

Dibutyl Phthlate (DBP): This chemical is used as a plasticizer to increase the viscosity of materials. It is considered to be an endocrine disruptor, which can cause cancerous tumors, birth defects, and may be associated with the development of learning disabilities, deformations, and certain types of cancers. Yikes!

Formaldehyde: Guys. This is a KNOWN human carcinogen. It poses the most risk through inhalation, and can irritate the eyes, cause headaches and cause difficulty breathing, or even trigger an asthma attack. Do you want to be painting your nails with the same product used to preserve your loved ones when they die? *Shudder*

Formaldehyde Resin: While not quite as bad as it’s parent Formaldehyde, the resin is a known allergen and skin irritant.

Camphor: This substance is highly toxic for humans. It’s quickly absorbed by the skin, and can cause nausea, dizziness, and headaches when inhaled.
